Forgotten

Some old farm equipment perhaps forgetten in the field for the winter. This photo was taken near the East Big Intervale Road in the Margaree Valley.

Point Aconi Lighthouse

A rather cold grey day when this shot was taken. On a clear day the Cape Breton Highlands and the Bird Islands are visible from this point.

A Warmer Time

As the weather turns colder in my part of the world I thought I'd post something that looks a little warmer.

Louisbourg Lighthouse Silhouette

I haven’t updated my blog in a little while so I figured I better make an entry to keep it current. The weather and work have kept me away from the camera during the last couple of months. I had great plans of getting some fall shots around the island while the autumn leaves were in their full glory. However, the weather has been pretty poor, (at least on my days off), and the wind and rain we had over the last couple of days have pretty much finished off the leaves for the season.

This is a shot of the historic Louisbourg lighthouse. The picture was taken in late afternoon back in August. I had been experimenting with taking silhouette shots and I like this one the best in the series taken that day.

Saint Ann's Bay At Sunset

A nice sunset shot of Saint Ann's Bay. We were on our way home after driving the Cabot Trail. Unfortunately the weather didn't cooperate with us for most of the day but it cleared up in time for a beautiful sunset.

Summer Photo Story

I have put together another Photo Story based on some of my spring/summer island photos. In order to keep the size down the resolution is only 640 X 480. The file is Windows Media Video format (WMV). It was encoded using the Windows Media Video 9.1 Image codec. I understand that some Mac users have difficulty viewing the WMV files. I have tried converting the WMV files to MOV, however, the quality seems to be getting lost in the conversion. Sorry 'bout that. :)

The link to the photo story can be found here or by clicking on the photo. Posted by Picasa

North River Little Falls

Today we took a short hike to the Little Falls in the North River Provincial Park. These falls are only about 10 feet in height but are quite wide. The hike to these falls is only about 2 km return and only has one slightly steep section. The trail is a little rough in spots but still a fairly easy hike when you only have a couple of hours to spare. The North River park has a much longer trail into a large waterfall (the largest in Nova Scotia) which is over 100 feet in height. The hike in is 9 km and is reported to be a good 6-7 hours hiking time. I hope to do this trail sometime later in the summer or perhaps early fall.

Soaring

A bald eagle looking for supper soaring above Lake O'Law in North East Margaree. The rolling hills visible in the background. The eagle was a fair piece away and was a stretch for my 200mm lens. Not as close as I would have liked but it still makes a nice desktop wallpaper. Posted by Picasa

Egypt Falls

The photo scarcely does these beautiful falls justice. Located off Egypt Road in the Margaree area of Cape Breton Island, these falls are about 60ft across and are wider than they are tall. The hike in is only about 1 km but drops about 80 meters over the course of that 1 km. Towards the end there is a rope available to assist in the climb down to the Matheson Glen Brook. The trail is well marked but very rough in spots. Once down the falls make the climb worthwhile. Relax and enjoy the spectacular view... and be prepared for the uphill climb on the way out.! Lobster Season

The lobster fishery is well underway in eastern Cape Breton. This shot was taken near Fort Petrie in the later part of the morning. The Low Point lighthouse is visible in the background

Uisge Ban Falls

This past Saturday my family and I decided to take our first hike of the Spring into the Uisage Ban Falls. These falls are about 50ft in height and are located near Baddeck, Nova Scotia.

The hike into the falls is fairly short (about 1.5kms) along a well travelled, well marked trail. A longer trail is available winding along the river.

This shot was taken using my 75-200mm lens at 75mm. I used Shutter Priority and a speed of 1/8 sec. to allow for the blurring (smokey) effect of the water falls.

Winter In Cape Breton

I created a short PhotoStory of several winter photos from around Cape Breton. The shots were all taken with my Canon EOS 20D. I tried to keep the size down so the movie is only 800 X 600. You can access the PhotoStory by clicking on the image or here. I hope you enjoy the scenery! Posted by Picasa

Welcome

Welcome to my Blog! I have been an amateur photographer for about 23 years, most of this time was with 35mm film. About a year ago I took the plunge and converted to digital with the purchase of my first digital camera body, a Canon EOS 20D. I haven't looked back since! I have learned a fair bit in the past year and I still have a great deal left to learn.

I hope to use this Blog as a place to share some of my work and the tips I have picked up. Hopefully others will share their knowledge as well so we can all learn from each others success and failures. I will try to update this page on a weekly basis as time and life permits.
